Red #1 –2012 Matchbook Syrah (Dunnigan Hills, CA), Wine Enthusiast – 89 pts, $15.99btl

A medium-bodied Syrah with an array of smoky, meaty aromas, along with ripe plum and tart blackberry flavors. The blend includes 9% Cabernet Sauvignon.  Matchbook celebrates the varietals that thrive out in the warm Dunnigan Hills climate. Dunnigan Hills is in Yolo County, just east of Napa. The wines are always fruit first, with oak flavors a supporting element.

Red #2 –2012 J. Bouchon ‘Canto Norte’ (Maule Valley, Chile), Vinous – 90 pts, $14.99btl

Spicy cherry and red berry that turns spicier with air.  Finishes with refreshing bite, supple tannins and strong fruit-driven persistence.  Outstanding value with 75% Merlot, 15% Carmenere, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Bouchon’s history goes back to 1892 when Emile Bouchon left Bordeaux, France to come to Chile. The family's vision is to take their great terroir and to focus on boutique wines made with the Bordeaux grape varieties they grow, and they are making some of Chile's most compelling values in red wine.
